We have seen a lot of Vantec heatsinks in the FrostyTech labs, and while most of them have turned out to be very good heatsinks, it is odd to think that they are hard to find locally. Instead of shelves full of Vantec heatsinks, we see lots and lots of Thermaltake and Coolermaster in our area. People it seems, can't get enough of those Volcano 6Cu+ heatsinks (why, I have no idea). If you talk to the sales geeks they'll tell you that the Coolermaster heatsinks tend arrive broken most often - usually a plastic strut here or a fan impeller there.

When you do find a store with a good supply of Vantec heatsinks on the shelves you almost always see a little box of pass-thru cables selling for $2.99 apeice. The trick of the trade is to install the Vantec heatsinks in the OEM whiteboxes, strip out the unneeded passthru cable and then resell it back the consumer. Just one of those things I guess...

The 6040 and 6040H (with just a faster fan) we are looking at today are pre-production, engineering samples. They are still a little rough around the edges, and you can see where someone has actually be grinding away on them, but they work fine.

    The 6040 is identical to the 6040H shown above except for the fan grill, and a slightly lower RPM fan. Both heatsinks have the same type of fins, and clipping mechanisms. So with that in mind we are going to combine this review to cover both heatsinks since explaining identical details really isn't going to do anyone good is it?

    The images you will see on the next page are good for both models of heatsink, so keep that in mind as well as we investigate how well the 6040 series performs on AMD class processors!
