Abstract: The 6040 and 6040H (with just a faster fan) we are looking at today are pre-production, engineering samples.

Vantec 6040H/6040 From All Angles
The Fan:

The Delta fan here is 25mm thick and draws 0.3A (about 5000RPM I'd guess) and the other fan on the 6040H draws about 0.48A and comes with a wire grill. Both fans are moderately noisy and will probably get on the nerves of persons not used to 'real' cooling. Both connect to the motherboard via a three-pin fan header.

Side A: With 38 copper fins each measuring 32x60mm there is a fair amount of surface area to use for cooling the processor. The aluminum fan shroud (plated with copper) is attached with some crimps and works well to protect the thin copper fins from potential damage. Each fin is interlocked with the next to ensure stability and a correct spacing of just over 1mm.
Side B:
Like other Vantec heatsinks before the 6040 series, the aluminum shroud has been plated with copper. This entirely for marketing purposes and poses no real benefit or loss to the overall cooling capabilities of the heatsink. Note the small crimps used to keep the shroud in place - these protrude slightly higher than the base does.
Side B: The real interesting thing wi th the 6040 series from Vantec is where the fins are interlocked with one another. The interlocked sections have been moved to the lower end of the fins, leaving the upper area free for air to flow through. Each fin is spaced 1mm apart from its neighbour and 0.2mm thick. The fins are dip brazed to the base, and this usually makes for a good thermal joint if done properly. The clip uses all three teeth on the socket and requires no tools.

Heatsink Base:

Vantec make OEM and inexpensive mass-consumer heatsinks and as a result they don't put a lot effort into finishing the base very nicely. The base is pretty flat, but the sanding marks are still visible. If Vantec would take the extra time to mill the base perfectly flat they would have a really killer heatsink here... maybe next time eh?
