Abstract: While aluminum is not as thermally conductive as copper it still offers some very good performance characteristics. And hey, the CV Chill has a nice thick aluminum base.

Overall the CV Chill performs on average against our set of reference coolers. It comes close to reaching the 50 degrees mark but still remains a few degrees shy. The Delta fan powers the performance of this cooler and it should be remembered that unlike many of the other heatsinks, the CV Chill contains no copper at all.

The lack of copper, and the less than smooth surface finish probably conspire to keep the CV Chill in the position it attained. It does stay well clear of the 60 degree mark so we'd have to classify this as a very good mid-range performer.

The results of the rise above ambient temperature table illustrate the positions of the reference coolers to the best degree. The CV Chill performs especially well on the larger copper die template which may hint at the design being more suited towards larger heatspreader covered processors than small die processors.

Acoustic Sample: CV Chill

The CV Chill uses a Delta AFB0612EH (25mm thick) 60mm fan that rotates at about 6800 RPM. To illustrate the noise this fan generates on the CV Chill we recorded the following start-up and running noise for about ten seconds. Shown are the spectral and waveform images of the sound that was produced by the mounted Delta fan. The noise is combination of both the fan, and the particular characteristics of the air moving through the CV Chill's many pins.

Standard Waveform view

The intensity of the sound can be gauged by the waveform image. Generally the smaller the waveform the quieter the heatsink will be. The Delta fan is one of the loudest cooling solutions in use so this waveform represents the louder end of spectrum. A quieter heatsink would have a smaller waveform image.
