CV Chill 188-pin Heatsink Review
CV Chill 188-pin Heatsink Review

Abstract: While aluminum is not as thermally conductive as copper it still offers some very good performance characteristics. And hey, the CV Chill has a nice thick aluminum base.

The Fan:
The CV Chill uses the standard Delta fan to achieve its cooling abilities. The 7-bladed Delta fan is 25mm in height and rated at about 6800 RPM. It connects to the power via a 3-pin jack (pass through cable also included).

Heatsink Top:
It's always mesmerizing looking down onto a fresh set of aluminum pins, and the CV Chill has got a lot of them for sure. The 3mm diameter pins are spaced roughly 1.5mm apart. Note the two clips the CV Chill uses to mount onto the socket.

Side A:
From the side it is easier to see the unique ferrous metal clip the CV Chill uses to connect to the socket. The clips are not spring steel and will bend slightly during installation if too much pressure is applied. A spring sits below the screw to keep the clips in constant tension when properly mounted to the socket.

Side B:
All sides of the CV Chill are essentially the same. The only differences are the lack of pins where the clips are built into the body of the heatsinks and the small notch machined from the base of the heatsinks.

Heatsink Base:
The base, while very flat is not as polished as it could be. The aluminum looks like it has been sanded with 600grit paper so it has the effect of a slightly rough surface finish, which you can feel if you rub your fingernail over it. As always a polished base would be much more desirable.

However, as long as some good quality silver-based thermal compound is used there should be no real problems with this area.

Time to test out the CV Chill on the Frosty Synthetic Temperature Test platform and compare it with several other of our reference heatsinks.
