360° View - Cryorig H7 Heatsink

The Cryorig H7 heatsink stands 145mm tall and ships with a single 120mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM fan header. Three, 6mm diameter nickel plated copper heatpipes pass through a 100mm tall aluminum fin stack, set 60mm and 90mm apart. Roughly 40 aluminum cooling fins are spaced 2.0mm apart. Each fin is stamped from ~0.4mm thick raw aluminum and features a square-tooth pattern on the leading edge in the Z-axis and a rhombic pattern on the trailing edge.

The H7's fan is firmly held in place with a pair of spring-wire fan clips that have small thumb tabs for convenience. Rubber bumpers stuck to each corner of the fan frame serve to insulate the plastic from rattling against the metal cooling fins, eliminating the potential for noise. A second set of fan clips is supplied. The bottom-most cooling fin is elevated 36mm above the socket, really minimal motherboard component clearance.

Also of note is the asymmetric location of the heatsink base plate. Rather than being centered on the body, it's shifted towards the leading fin edge, this is done to allow the heatsink to fit between memory slots on motherboards where DIMM slots straddle the CPU socket.

The three heat pipes are soldered to a somewhat narrow nickel plated copper base plate; 40 x 35mm and between 2-7mm thick. The extruded aluminum cap which helps distribute the clamping forces from the attached X-shaped metal mounting brackets is mechanically swaged in place. The top is capped with a plastic bezel.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

Curiously, the nickel plated copper heatspreader at the base of Cryorig's H7 heatsink is a relatively narrow 35mm wide (by 40mm long). It measures 2-7mm thick and has a smooth milled surface finish. Surface roughness is at or better than ~32 microinches. Compared against an engineer's straight edge, the base of the Cryorig H7 is very slightly convex in both axes.
