Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

BeQuiet 's Shadow Rock 2 heatsink ships with a 120mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin fan header. The 159mm tall heatsink uses four 8mm diameter copper heatpipes which pass through a square, 107mm tall fin stack. The raw aluminum fins measure 0.3mm thick and are spaced 1.75mm apart. The bottom-most fin is elevated 45mm above the socket for clearance.

The Shadow Rock 2 cooler is 122mm wide and 149mm deep, giving it a very boxy footprint. The large 8mm diameter heat pipes are soldered to the copper base plate but and swaged into the raw aluminum fins. Heatpipes are evenly spaced ~14 to ~29mm apart.

The nickel plated copper base of the BeQuiet Shadow Rock 2 measures 40x39mm in size and is between 2-6mm thick. The 8mm aluminum cap provides support for mounting brackets. At the top of the cooler we find an aluminum bezel and turned heatpipe caps - these are purely esthetic treatments.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

BeQuiet's Shadow Rock 2 incorporates a thick nickel plated copper base plate which is soldered onto the four 8mm diameter copper heatpipes. Surface finish on the baseplate is very smooth, owing to the plating. Surface roughness is at or better than ~8 microinches. The baseplate is quite flat, but shows evidence of very minor waviness in one axis and concavity in the other axis, most likely from the plating process.
