SilentiumPC Fera2 HE1224 Heatsink Review

Abstract: The SilentiumPC Fera2 HE1224 is a 154mm tall CPU cooler built around four 6mm diameter exposed copper heatpipes. The relatively thin profile should allow it to fit with ease in most motherboards, with a minimum of interference from near by memory module or VRM motherboard heatsinks.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

SilentiumPC's Fera2 HE1224 heatsink ships with a 120mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin fan header. The 154mm tall heatsink has four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes, each heatpipe is spaced 4mm from the next. The aluminum fins measure 0.4mm thick and are spaced 2.0mm apart. The bottom-most fin is elevated 39mm above the base for motherboard clearance.

The four 6mm diameter copper heat pipes are swaged into the aluminum base plate in such a way that the center-most heatpipes intersect the center area of the fins.

The exposed heatpipe base of SilentiumPC Fera2 HE1224 heatsink measures 45x35mm in size. The aluminum support plate for the mounting brackets is 11.5mm thick. Looking at the top of the heatsink we can more clearly see how the thermal engineer designing this heatsink has configured all heatpipes in a straight line.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

The exposed heatpipe base of the SilentiumPC Fera2 HE1224 heatsink has a slightly rough machined finish, so surface roughness is higher than ~64 microinches. According to the straight edge, the base is perfectly flat in both axes. The heatpipes just outside of the CPU contact area are a bit 'dimpled', hopefully this doesn't indicate that more than the minimum of metal was shaved off the base to flatten it.
