The 120mm fan on the Gigabyte Volar heatsink has big impeller blades that are translucent, though it is not internally illuminated. With the fan removed you can see the aluminum body of the heatsink, and the three copper heatpipes which are embedded into it with thermal adhesive. The opening at the center is 30mm round, the entire cooler 117mm across. A grill protects the heatsink from sucking up errant wires. Power is supplied by a 3-pin motherboard fan header, and a resistor may be used to adjust speed from 2000RPM to 1500RPM.

Below the fins of the Gigabyte Volar heatsink is 33mm of space for adjacent motherboard components. Three 6mm diameter copper heatpipes are soldered to the 5mm thick copper base. These pass through the extruded aluminum heatsink and are bonded with thermal adhesive. At the base the heatpipes are packed edge-to-edge to ensure good thermal transmission. Each aluminum fin is 1.14mm to 0.75mm thick on average, and spaced roughly 2.5mm apart. A thin ventilated aluminum shroud wraps the aluminum extrusion, which is made of two stacked pieces and is 35mm thick. The upper body is set at a 45° angle.

The length of each aluminum fin is 34mm from the central 50mm round 9.5mm thick donut of solid aluminum. The 5mm thick copper base measures 39.5x39.5mm in size. There are six screw holes around the outside of the base to attach the Intel and AMD mounting brackets.
