The Heatsink Fan:
The 120x120x25mm fan is held in place on the Scythe Mugen with a pair of springy wire clips. A second 120mm fan may be installed onto the opposite side of the heatsink if desired (not included), or 90mm fans can be attached to either edge. The fan spins at a low 1200RPM, generating less than 38dBA noise according to Frostytech's real world sound measurements. It connects via a standard 3-pin fan header to the motherboard and supports RPM monitoring.

Scythe call the overlapping fins here the "Infinity Interleave Fin Structure". Every other fin is a different width, some 42mm and others 96mm wide. This gives the Mugen heatsink its distinctive fin density right around the heatpipes, and wide fin pitch at the center of the heatsink where airflow is reduced. The voids between the aluminum fins are meant to aide slower airflow moving through the cooler with as little resistance as possible. Each aluminum fin is 0.38mm thick, and spaced 3.5mm or 1.5mm apart.
Poking out the top of the Scythe Mugen heatsink are the tips of five "U" shaped 6mm diameter copper heatpipes. To help reduce pressure drop a 5mm plenum is left behind the fan motor. Springy wire clips will hold a 120mm fan firmly in place on any one of four sides of the heatsink. Only one pair of 120mm sized clips is provided. The ten heat pipe ends are covered with false nuts for the sake of appearance. The bulk of the heatsink is 125x114mm in size.

Heatsink Side A:
The Scythe Mugen heatsink stands 155mm tall, the fins making up 108mm of that total height. There is 38mm space below the bottom most fin to provide clearance for adjacent motherboard components. At the bottom is the extruded aluminum heatsink which the mounting clips lock into. The five 6mm diameter heatpipes are soldered between the aluminum extrusion and a 2mm thin copper base plate below. The Mugen heatsink is 125mm wide, so you might want to measure your motherboard clearances first before picking this unit up.

Heatsink Side B:
The Scythe Mugen is a big heatsink. The false nuts covering the heatpipes add an additional 14mm to its overall height unnecessarily.

The copper base soldered onto the bottom of the Scythe Mugen heatsink measures 45x52mm in size. It is very smoothly polished with a surface roughness of ~8 microinches. The base is generally very flat, but very slightly concave in one axis. The extruded aluminum section above the copper base provides rigidity and a place for the mounting clips to transfer force directly onto the CPU core. The copper plate itself is quite thin, just 2mm thick in fact. The heatpipes, copper base and small extruded aluminum heatsink are all soldered together.
