FrostyTech Mk.II
            Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results

            Intel Pentium D / Extreme
Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W Intel Core
2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at
            85W Results based on readings
from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads
applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform.
Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by
determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test.
Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available
          here. |

    | *heatsinks are ranked according to
the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low
temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference
heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test
result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside
in each specific heatsink review. |
The heat output
from Intel processors varies widely between single and multi-core processors, so
Frostytech uses two values which represent the upper limit of each existing CPU
family.
With a 150W heat load applied
by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the
Asus Silent Square EVO heatsink yields a rise above ambient temperature of
25.8°C (42.8 dBA) at the fans' stock speed of 2300RPM. At a slightly reduced fan
speed, noise levels fell to 35.1 dBA, while temperatures held steady at
32.9°C.
To measure the effectiveness of the Asus
Silent Square EVO heatsink on a Intel Core
2 Duo class processor, an 85W heat load was applied next. The Asus Silent
Square EVO heatsink handled this equally well, maintaining a 15.6°C rise over ambient temperature. Again, the fan speed was then reduced to about 1000RPM, and in this case
temperatures held steady at 19.3°C over ambient.Asus'
Silent Square EVO heatsink is a good lower noise thermal solution with the
capability of handling higher heat loads from modern day multi-core processors.
Its bulky size and less than quick installation steps are the only downside,
apart from a slightly expensive price point. For those of you
that like to LANparty, once installed the Silent Square EVO isn't likely to go
anywhere.
 Ultimately, the AMD
and Intel thermal results are good for a heatsink of this class, and knowing Asus
it should be pretty easy to track down in computer stores from San
Francisco to Prague. It's not the coolest heatsink Frostytech has tested, but all to often
we hear from readers that the best heatsinks are near impossible
to find in certain markets - so there ya go.
