FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
AMD Athlon64 / FX / X2 & Sempron class heatsinks
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 125W heat load on the K8 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. *heatsinks are ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

With a 125W heat load applied by the FrostyTech synthetic thermal test platform, the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu heatsink yields a good 34.0°C rise above ambient temperature at its lowest and quietest fan speed, with only a whisper of 35.1 dBA noise. When we turn the dial of the Fan Mate2 all the way up, the CNPS7700-Cu's 120mm fan spins away at an even 2000RPM. This is known as the "low-noise" or "normal" fan speed mode, and in this setting the CNPU7700-Cu yields a rise above ambient temperature of 27.0°C, with 50.7 dBA noise. A very good thermal result by any standard, but not as low as units by Noctua, Thermalright, Apack, or Arctic Cooling yield for a similar noise class.

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. As a low noise heatsink for the socket 939 AMD Athlon64 platform the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu heatsink is very good at what it does. Only the Zalman CNPS9500 LED, Verax Helado, and a heatsink Frostytech will be reviewing shortly from a company called Thermalfly post better thermal results with similarly low noise outputs (36.0 dBA, 36.2 dBA and 35.4 dBA respectively).

On the socket 775 Intel platform, the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu is equally well positioned as a low noise heatsink, although the design is clearly starting to give way to heatpipe-based models.

However, as low noise heatsinks go, the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu is getting a little long in the tooth. Newer models like the Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 have surpassed its capabilities, but for the right price the CNPS7700-Cu still offers a lot.... and quietly too.
