Cho-Liang CB00941A Pentium 4 Heatsink Review

The search for the diamond in the rough of the cooling world sometime leas us to some new and previously unheard of heatsink manufacturers, like Cho-Liang. Among the various heatsinks Cho-Liang manufacture is the CB00941A which classifies as an OEM level cooler because of its simple extrusion build.

While the heatsink itself is nothing really that special the clips which hold it in place are kind of neat. Moving along the lines of the older socket 423 heatsinks, the CB00941A has a small tab on either side which supports two spring tensioned clips. Unlike the older socket 423 heatsinks however, this little guy uses the newer socket 478 HSRM and is officially rated at 0.417 C/W by the company.

The heatsink is rated for 1.7GHz to 2.4GHz Pentium 4 processors, but that seems a little high to be honest.

    The Fans:
The 9-bladed fan moves about 30CFM of air over the 27 aluminum fins below. There is no fan shroud to direct the air, and the base of the fan is pretty much flush with the fins. The fan draws 0.22A and connects to the motherboard fan header via a three-pin clip with support for RPM monitoring.

    Bare Heatsink:
The 23 extruded aluminum fins are smooth on all surfaces. Interestingly, there are no cross cuts on the CB00941A to help allow exhaust air escape the heatsink quicker. Rather, each 70mm long fin is one solid fin.

    Side A:
There is some scalloping on outside of the heatsink but this would be more for grip, than for improved cooling capabilities. With no cross cuts, there are only two directions exhaust air can travel to exit the system.

    Side B:
The base ranges in thickness from 4mm at the edges to 10mm at the center. Most extruded heatsinks are only 6mm thick at the center, but with the range in height, the CB00941A probably tries to improve heat spreading. The fins are 1mm thick and spaced 1.5mm apart.

    Heatsink Base:
A brushed finish where the processor meets with the heatsink is not exactly ideal, but at least the base is fairly flat. Some lapping would do wonders for this heatsink, and the use of a good quality thermal compound goes without saying.
