Abstract: By doing away with the heatsink heatspreader, inconsistencies in the solder bond between heatpipes and copper base plate are omitted. The exposed heatpipe base approach also lightens things up, the 160mm tall SE-214X weighs a modest 740grams. In addition to the copper heatpipes there is the aforementioned vertical aluminum rod going down through the center of the fins.

360° View - ID-Cooling SE-214X Heatsink

The SE-214X heatsink stands 160mm tall and ships with a 122mm PWM fan with integrated anti-vibration pads to stop metal-on-plastic vibration, power is via a 4-pin fan header. Four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes and one 6mm solid aluminum rod pass through the 111mm tall aluminum fin stack. Each aluminum fin measures 0.4mm thick and are spaced 2.0mm apart. The bottom fin is elevated 36mm above the socket for clearance, with this section narrowed from 122mm to 90mm as well.

The heatsink is 122mm wide at the top and 90mm wide for the last 26mm of the fin stack. The SE-214X is 48mm deep (73mm with the fan) but the fin stack is not centered over the base, as you can see above. The asymmetrical design means the fan doesn't stick out too far to one side.

The four copper heatpipes are exposed at the base. The aluminum rod is intended to apply force to the aluminum cap the heatpipes are swagged into, to ensure it does not shift or separate from the heatpipes after multiple heating/cooling cycles. The base of the ID-Cooling SE-214X heatsink measures 38x43mm in size.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

ID-Cooling's SE-214X heatsink has an exposed heatpipe base. The base has a machined surface finish. Surface roughness is lower than than ~64 microinches. The base is flat in the axis parallel to the direction of heatpipes and in the other axis one edge of each heatpipe is very slightly higher than the opposite.
