Abstract: Though identical in appearance the Evercool Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 (2010 ed.) heatsink is actually a revised and updated version of the Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 cooler Frostytech tested in 2009. Chief among the differences is an up to date mounting bracket that accommodates the full range of Intel processors (socket 775/1155/1156/1366) in addition to the full gamut of AMD chips.

360° View - Evercool HPJ-12025 Transformer 4 (2010 Ed.) Heatsink

The Transformer 4 is equipped with twin, silver 120mm PWM fans arranged in a push-pull configuration. Both fans spin at 2200-1000RPM and draw power from a 4-pin motherboard fan header. A PWM fan y-splitter cable is provided to simplify motherboard power connections. Four 8mm diameter copper heatpipes extend from the base up through the 112mm tall tower of aluminum fins. Each aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced ~2.0mm from the next.

Evercool's Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 (2010 ed.) heatsink stands 160mm tall, the bottom-most fin is elevated 37mm above the CPU for clearance. The silvery 120mm fans are attached to the heatsink with screwed-on spring wire fan clips. The four heat pipes are aligned in a straight row where they pass through the fins and exposed so as to make direct contact with the processor. The base incorporates a 13mm thick aluminum block for clamping.

The usable area of the Evercool Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 (2010 ed.)'s base is 49 x 44mm in area. Looking from the top down reveals a 14mm plenum created by the raised edge of the aluminum fins. Note the three 2.0mm tabs of aluminum separating each of the copper heatpipes on the base.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The base of the Evercool Transformer 4 HPJ-12025 (2010 ed.) has a surface roughness of approximately 32 microinches, which is considered good. The base is machined flat in both axis and the copper and aluminum parts are flush.
