Coolermaster Vortex Plus Heatsink Review
Coolermaster Vortex Plus Heatsink Review
Abstract: The Vortex Plus heatsink stands 83mm tall, in total. A 25mm thick, 92mm PWM fan exhausts downward so waste air impinges on a lower extruded aluminum heatsink that sits atop the processor. It's both a good use of space for additional cooling surface area and an admission by heatsink designers that the aluminum fins above aren't getting the whole job done by themselves.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 92mm PWM fan spins at 800-2800RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header (backwards compatible with 3-pin type). Four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes support the upper portion of the heatsink and pass through a 14mm x 89mm x 100mm array of aluminum fin measuring 0.3mm. Fins are spaced 1.5mm apart.

The Vortex Plus heatsink stands 83mm tall, with the bottom-most fin elevated 41mm above the CPU for clearance. The heat pipes are positioned off to one side and wrap around to make direct contact with the processor IHS. The base incorporates an 8mm solid aluminum base plate to provide extra support for its clamping brackets.

The base measures 45x45mm in size. Each copper heatpipe has been swaged into the aluminum base block and the surfaces made flush by a light sanding. Surface roughness is on the order of ~32 microinches, which is considered good.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The Coolermaster Vortex Plus heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately 32 microinches, which is considered good. The base itself has a sanded finish and is very slightly convex in the direction of the heatpipes, very slightly concave in the opposite axis. The degree of curvature isn't that significant, but it's enough to notice when held up to an engineers straight edge. The copper and aluminum parts are flush on the unit Frostytech tested.

Next up, acoustic noise measurements and then it's onto AMD and Intel thermal test reports on Frostytech!
