Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The 120mm PWM fan on the Zaward Gyre heatsink spins at 1000-2000RPM. Power is supplied by a 4-pin motherboard fan header. Three 8mm diameter copper heatpipes are packed one next to the other at the base and extend rather closely up through the 110mm tall fin section. Each aluminum fin is roughly 0.2mm thick and spaced 2.5mm apart. The central hole through the center of the Gyre is 40mm across.

The bulk of the Gyre heatsink is elevated 40mm above the CPU, the heatsink itself stands 149mm tall. In the photo's above you can see what the heatsink looks like with and without the fan shroud, from the same orientation. The aluminum base block that supports the three copper heatpipes measures 14mm thick. The 8mm copper heatpipes are spaced a close 3mm apart (on edge) from on another as they pass through the aluminum fins.

The three exposed heatpipes on the base of this heatsink are perfectly flush with the surface. The base of the Zaward Gyre measures 35x42mm in area. From the top looking down you get a better sense of just how uniqe the Zaward Gyre heatsink really is. The four circular holes are for the screwdriver to access the Intel 775 mounting screws from above.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The base of the Zaward Gyre heatsink is perfectly flat in both axis. The copper heatpipes and aluminum base cap have a sanded surface finish, surface roughness is ~32 microinches or better.

Next up will be the sound level measurement charts, then it's on to AMD and Intel thermal test results.
