Abstract: Traditional parallel fin-to-fan relationships are thrown out the window and what we're left with is a chevron-shaped aluminum fin tower with the fan set at 45 degrees to the leading edge.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

A single 120mm fan ships with the Scythe Kama Angle heatsink, although additional notches make it possible to install 120mm fans on the flat sides too (extra wire clips not supplied). The PWM fan rotates at 500-1200RPM, power is supplied by a 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header. Four U-shaped 6mm copper heatpipes are packed closely at the base and loop around to both sides of the 36mm wide chevrom shaped aluminum fins. The nickel plated copper base measures 37.5 x 37.5mm and is mirror smooth and flat.

The fan is mounted at 45-degrees to the tower of aluminum fins which are in a chevron shape. The aluminum fins are 0.3mm thick and spaced 1.5mm apart, there is 40mm clearance at the base for adjacent motherboard components. The copper base block measures 6mm thick.

The Scythe Kama Angle has a chevron shaped aluminum fins connected by four copper heatpipes to the base of the heatsink. With the fan removed we can clearly see through the cooler. The 120mm fan is held in place with two springy wire clips, mounting brackets attach to the base of the heatsink with four screws.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The base of the Scythe Kama Angle heatsink is perfectly flat in both axis. The nickel-plated copper base has a mirror smooth finish, surface roughness is ~4 microinches or better, which is excellent. Next up on Frostytech, acoustic measurements.
