Noctua NH-C12P Heatsink Review
Noctua NH-C12P Heatsink Review
  85%
Abstract: Tower heatsinks may offer the best performance of any heatsink style, but many computer cases can't accommodate +140mm CPU cooler heights. 'Down exhaust' or 'impingment' heatsinks are so named because the fan blows downward.

FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

The heat output from Intel processors varies, so Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing CPU families.

With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the Noctua NH-C12P heatsink maintains a temperature of 21.2°C over ambient, with 40.4dBA noise. Noctua's NH-C12P heatsink was then tested with a 85W heat load, resulting in a low 13.1°C rise over ambient temperature.

The black fan speed reducer keeps noise to about 35.6dBA. At this fan speed on the 150W synthetic test platform, the Noctua NH-C12P heatsink holds steady at 25.1°C over ambient. Next was the 85W head load test, where temperatures stayed at 14.8°C over ambient. For the blue fan speed reducer, the 150W and 85W tests saw temperature rise to 27.8°C and 16.3°C respectively. Noise levels remained constant at 33.2dBA.

With its NF-P12 fan, the Noctua NH-C12P heatsink runs pretty quiet at full speed and maintains very good test temperatures. In fact, it performs nearly identical to the Noctual NH-U12P tower heatsink, which also uses a NF-P12 120mm fan.

Noctua's new NH-C12P heatsink is a good alternative to the old NH-U12P model where vertical space is limited. The two fan speed reducers give users an easy way to reduce the noise output, but the slower the fan spins the hotter the CPU will get... The black fan speed reducer appears to offer a happy medium, with a moderate increase in temperatures. While there are a good many heatsinks that offer lower temperatures at their fan's respective stock speed, only two thus far offer comparable noise levels with a drop in temperatures, the Xigmatek HDT-S1283, and Scythe Infinity SCINF-1000. I think most users would be satisfied with the NH-C12P heatsink running in its default configuration. It's a great lower noise heatsink, not the best, but quite good for its slightly more vertically compact package.
