FrostyTech.com Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 125W heat load on the Mk.II Test Platform. Thermal Test values for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperature at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 125w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

the rise above ambient temperature test results for the gigabyte neon cooler 8-bl heatsink are a little higher than we would have liked to have seen from a mainstream solution, but not completely out of line for a low noise cooler. the frostytech mk.ii platform stresses each k8-class heatsink with 125w of heat, and once equilibrium is reached we note the rise in temperature (2nd column from the right) above that of the ambient temp. so in effect what we're doing is leveling the playing field and allowing comparisons between each heatsink in this reference list. The far right column identifies the noise level of each specific heatsink.

The Gigabyte Neon Cooler 8-BL excels as a low noise heatsink, but because of the limited airflow from its 2000RPM fan and standard extruded aluminum construction, it can't quite keep up. It will cool a socket 754/939 AMD Athlon64 processor satisfactorily, but there are certainly other heatsinks available which can offer lower temperatures. If low noise cooling of a early model Athlon64 processor is your concern, just be sure that case ventilation is good and this affordable little heatsink will keep temperatures within operating parameters.
