Zalman CNPS6500-Cu Fan Heatsink Review
Zalman CNPS6500-Cu Fan Heatsink Review
Abstract: There is certainly no denying that Zalman have hit upon a good thing, and the 6500-series is proof of that.

Acoustic Samples: Listen to this Heatsink

The CNPS6500Cu comes with the Zalman Fanmate 1 which allows users to control how fast the 92mm fan rotates, and thus how noisy it is. The first recording is a standard 10 sec bit with the fan connected directly to the power supply. The second recording is of the fan connected via the Fanmate 1, and also illustrates what happens when you turn the dial down so the fan makes less noise.

You can see the effect visually in the second wave form image, or you can click on the pair of headphones and listen in to each recording separately. Since the Zalman heatsinks all use the same type of fan, each of these recordings applies to all similar flower heatsinks.

Sound Level Measurements:
Being able to listen to the heatsink allows you to hear things that pure numbers alone cannot get across, but to further emphasize Frosty's reliance on cold hard facts when evaluating a heatsink we took some sound level measurements with a HHSL1 meter. While the list of heatsinks which have been measured for sound levels is still growing, but this is now firmly part of our test procedures.
FrostyTech Sound Level Results
Manufacturer Model Noise Level Scale
1 Zalman CNPS6500Cu 47.4/28.9 dB quiet
2 Zalman CNPS6500AlCu 47.4/28.9 dB
3 Intel Socket 478 42.5 dB
4 AVC 117140 56.1 dB louder
The split results for the Zalman heatsinks means this; the first measurement of 47.4 dB is of the fan without the FanMate 1 in place, the second measurement of just 28.9 dB is of the fan with the FanMate 1 set to its maximum point. Note that both Zalman heatsinks use the same fan system, so the measurements are identical. The AVC 117140 is quite a bit more noise than the Zalman flower heatsinks are.

With only 2 degrees difference (100W test) between the all copper Zalman CNPS6500Cu and the best performing reference cooler we were exceptionally pleased with the results. Taking into consideration that the CNPS6500Cu is designed to be a low noise quiet cooler these results are really impressive. Generally speaking, quiet heatsinks perform quite poorly when stacked up against everyday performance coolers.

Despite the fact that we are looking at a really heavy heatsink, the gains in thermal performance and acoustic levels make the CNPS6500cu probably the best option for the socket 478 Pentium 4 at this time.

The aluminum and copper CNPS6500-AlCu comes up next on the list with a weight of just 440 grams and almost as impressive performance. Note, the tests were conducted with the 92mm fans running at full speed only.

The rise above ambient temperature results are equally as impressive, the CNPS6500Cu is simply an amazing performing *quiet* heatsink for the Pentium 4 processor.

The results on the 50W test are within 1 degree, and on the 100W test within 3 of the AVC Sunflower (but with a lot less noise).

The only things to keep in mind with the CNPS6500 series are that the motherboard must be removed to install the heatsink, and with a weight of 910 grams, the computer should not be transported with it installed. If for whatever reason the heatsink came loose, it could do a lot of damage were it to be bouncing around inside the computer case.

That aside, we are very pleased with the CNPS6500Cu because it is one of the few "great performing, quiet heatsinks" we have had the chance to review. Bottom line, looks good, weighs a ton, and cools exceptionally well for a low noise heatsink!
