Abstract: Weighing in at 630 grams, Evercool's Transformer 3 heatsink is compatible with socket 775/1155/1156/1366 Intel CPUs and socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM3 AMD processors. As with so many other heatsinks, the Evercool Transformer 3 features three exposed 6mm diameter heatpipes at the base.

Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

The fancy looking silver coated 120mm PWM fan spins at 2200-80RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin PWM motherboard fan header. It is backwards compatible with 3-pin connectors. Three 6mm diameter copper heatpipes extend from the base up to the top of the 160mm tall Transformer 3 heatsink. Each aluminum fin measures 0.2mm thick and is spaced 2.0mm apart. Note the little tab on the base for the AMD bracket to hook over.

The Evercool Transformer 3 heatsink stands 160mm tall, the tower is 50mm wide without a fan and the first fin is elevated 35mm above the CPU socket. Heat pipes are positioned 11mm on center at the base plate and rise up 72mm, 64mm and 55mm apart. The base incorporates a 14mm thick aluminum section to provide support for clamping.

The usable area of the Evercool Transformer 3's base is 40x40mm in size. Looking from the top down we see the angled pattern the heatpipes take through the fins of the heatsink tower. The fan plenum ranges from 4-7mm. Heatpipes are positioned in the path of highest airflow and rubber mounts are used to hold the fan in place.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The surface roughness of the base of the Evercool Transformer 3 heatsink is approximately 16 microinches, which is considered excellent. The base has a smooth machined finish which is flat in both axis. Unlike many HDT heatsinks, there are virtually no voids along the sides where the heatpipes meet the aluminum support base.
