360° View - Glacialtech Alaska Heatsink

The 120mm PWM fan supplied with the Glacialtech Alaska heatsink spins at 1600-700RPM and draws power from a standard 4-pin motherboard fan header. Six 6mm diameter copper heatpipes rise up through bare aluminum fins which have many 2mm diameter perforations across the surface. The fins have a rolled trough along the front and rear edges as well. Each aluminum fin measures 0.3mm thick and is spaced 1.5mm and 3.5mm apart.

Glacialtech's Alaska heatsink stands 156mm tall, the bottom-most fin being 33mm above the CPU socket for clearance. From the side the 75mm wide fin pattern looks like a honeycomb. The six heatpipes are soldered side by side on the 2mm thick copper base plate and expand outward to form a flattened X-pattern where they pass through the aluminum fins. The base incorporates an 11mm thick aluminum extrusion for clamping and a little extra cooling surface area.

Looking at the Glacialtech Alaska heatsink from the top you can see the perforated aluminum fins more clearly. Fin edges have a saw-tooth pattern to help decrease air flow resistance. The six nickel plated heatpipes intersect the fins in a sort of X-pattern that permits equitable heat conduction to the higher airflow regions of the fins. The nickel plated copper base plate is soldered to the heatpipes, but seemingly a little small at 30x40mm in size.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineers straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axis.

The nickel plated copper base of the Glacialtech Alaska heatsink has a surface roughness of approximately 16 microinches, which is considered good. The base has sanded surface finish and is generally flat in one axis, but slightly convex in the opposite.
