Abstract: The Scythe Big Shuriken is actually a really small heatsink, well not so much tiny as low profile. From the CPU to the top of the fan, the Big Shuriken measures a scant 57mm tall. That's not a whole lot of space to cram in a heatsink, but somehow Scythe have packed in four 6mm diameter heatpipes, 60 or 70 razor thin aluminum fins and a 120mm fan.

FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*Heatsinks are ranked according to the 150W thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). Low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. For reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12V) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

The heat output from Intel processors varies widely between single and multi-core processors, so Frostytech relies on two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Scythe Big Shuriken heatsink maintains a test temperature of 34.6°C over ambient. Noise levels hold steady at 39.6dBA.

If fan speed is dropped from 1600RPM to 900RPM, the synthetic CPU test die sees a temperature rise to 48.6°C over ambient (34.6dBA noise). It's worth mentioning that this situation is unlikely as the Big Shuriken's PWM fan would not decrease fan speed this low under full thermal load.

For the next round of testing the Scythe Big Shuriken heatsink was tested with an 85W heat load; akin to an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. In this case the Big Shuriken maintained a good 22.1°C rise in temperature at full fan speed and 25.1°C over ambient temperature at 900RPM fan speed.

As you've likely surmised, Scythe's Big Shuriken (SCBSK-1000) heatsink is a very quiet low profile cooler that offers good thermal performance on TDP 125W AMD platforms and average performance on TDP 150W Intel systems. In either situation the heatsink is more than satisfactory for 85W-class energy efficient CPUs.

At a time when there is a dwindling number of thermal solution manufacturers that consistently continue to introduce quiet heatsinks, it's reassuring to know Scythe continue to set the bar. Bottom line, the 57mm tall Scythe Big Shuriken heatsink is very good compared to similarly sized low profile heatsinks, and average against the remaining heatsinks on Frostytech's reference lists.
