Zalman CNPS9900 LED Intel Core i7 Compatible Heatsink Review
Overall Rating:   81%
Abstract: Like most Zalman heatsinks, the CNPS9900 LED is pretty unique. It is based on a double 'fan' design, but with its 120mm PWM fan floating between the two radial copper fins.

FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

Noise Level (dBA)
*Heatsinks are ranked according to the 150W thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). Low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. For reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12V) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

Frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing Intel CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform first, the Zalman CNPS9900 LED heatsink maintains a very good temperature of 20.2°C over ambient (57.5dBA noise) at full fan speed.

Under similar test conditions and reduced fan speed, the noise output of the Zalman CNPS9900 LED levels off at a quiet 39.3 dBA, while temperatures rise moderately to 30.6°C.

Zalman's CNPS9900 LED heatsink was then tested with an 85W heat load; akin to a Core 2 Duo processor. In this test the CNPS9900 LED was more at home and easily maintained a result of just 13.3°C over ambient temperature at default fan speed, and 18.1°C at its reduced fan speed.

As you've seen in both Intel and AMD thermal test results, the Zalman CNPS9900 LED heatsink is a good lower noise thermal solution when its fan is running at 1000RPM (*see Tip below). There are of course other LGA775 and AMD K8 heatsinks which manage similarly low noise levels with better performance, but LGA1366 compatibility is another matter entirely... With its fan running at full speed the Zalman CNPS9900 LED offers up very good performance, but sacrifices silent running.

*TIP - Here's the real tip for users of the Zalman CNPS9900 LED heatsink... Remove the plastic fan shroud. When the fan is running at 2000RPM this will reduce the sound pitch noticeably and drop noise levels very slightly (~2 dBA), in addition to lowering temperatures by about a half a degree. The real benefit however comes when fan speed is at its lowest. In our tests noise wasn't significantly affected by removing the fan shroud while the fan was spinning at 1000RPM, but the CPU die temperature did drop by a good 5-6°C!
