FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

*heatsinks are ranked according to the 150w thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. for reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12v) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

the heat output from intel processors varies, so frostytech tests with two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing cpu families.

With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Coolermaster GeminII S heatsink maintains a temperature of 21.3°C over ambient (49.6dBA noise). Coolermaster's GeminII S was then tested with a 85W heat load at the same fan speed, resulting in a low 13.4°C rise over ambient temperature.

For the next round of testing the speed of the 120mm PWM fan was reduced to 1000RPM. Under these conditions the Coolermaster GeminII S heatsink held steady with temperatures of 31.8°C and 19.0°C over ambient for the 150W and 85W heat load tests respectively. Noise levels remained constant at 36.0dBA.

Curiously, the thermal results for the Coolermaster GeminII S heatsink are quite close to the similarly sized Noctua NH-C12P heatsink which also shares some design attributes. The Noctua model operates about 9 dBA quieter at full speed, and at lower fan speeds the performance of each heatsink diverges however.

Overall the Coolermaster GeminII S is a very good heatsink for both Intel and AMD platforms when running at full fan speed, particularly if we consider its compact height. There are of course a couple dozen other heatsinks to pick from if you demand lower temperatures, or a little less noise. Most of those options are "tower heatsinks" in the +145mm high range however. When running in its quietest fan mode the GeminII S heatsink offers us average performance. Bottom line, the Coolermaster GeminII S is a good thermal option hampered by cumbersome mounting system.
