Abstract: Gigabyte's Volar heatsink has a 120mm smokey grey fan has rather large impeller blades that look as if they'll propel air into the cooling fins of its donut shape heatsink with quiet force.

FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
Intel Pentium D / Extreme Edition & Quad Core class heatsinks tested at 150W
Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4 / Celeron class heatsinks tested at 85W

Results based on readings from a 30x30mm copper interface die with 150W and 85W heat loads applied on the LGA775 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

Noise Level (dBA)
*Heatsinks are ranked according to the 150W thermal test results column (rise over ambient temp.). Low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. For reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12V) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

The heat output from Intel processors varies widely between single and multi-core processors, so Frostytech relies on two thermal values that represent the upper limits of existing CPU families. With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Gigabyte Volar heatsink maintains a satisfactory test temperature of 36.3°C over ambient (56.1 dBA).

After reducing fan speed from 2000RPM to 1500RPM with the included resistor, the Volar heatsink yields a moderate increase in temperature to 40.3°C over ambient. Noise levels decrease slightly from 56.1 dBA to 50.1 dBA.

Given the unique design of the Gigabyte Volar heatsink, we're left a little dissappointed by both the acoustic and thermal results seen here. The Volar GH-PSV21-FB cools satisfactorily on both AMD and Intel platforms, but it fails to achieve a sufficiently quiet operating mode to really justify itself. Given its standing compared to the stock Intel heatsinks in particular, the Gigabyte Volar just doesn't offer any advantage.

Unfortunately, in spite of its unique design the Gigabyte Volar heatsink only succeeds as a satisfactory heatsink; it doesn't offer impressively cool temperatures, it doesn't bring ultra-quiet operation to the table. The Volar is one of those heatsinks that looks good, but whose performance is the opposite.

Take a stroll through the heatsink test results charts on this page, and the previous, you'll find many other heatsinks that run both cooler, and quieter.
