Akasa AK-876 AMD Athlon64 Heatsink Review
Akasa AK-876 AMD Athlon64 Heatsink Review
  81%
Abstract: As you might expect, the Akasa AK-876 is a lower noise AMD processor heatsink that is both easy to install and fairly lightweight. A thermally controlled fan was abandoned for a PWM compliant one instead.

FrostyTech Mk.II Synthetic Thermal Heatsink Test Results
AMD Athlon64 / FX / X2 & Sempron class heatsinks
Results based on readings from a 38x38mm copper interface die with 125W heat load on the K8 version of the Mk.II Test Platform. Temperature results listed for each heatsink were calculated by determining the rise over ambient temperatures at time of test. Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

125W Thermal Test (°C) Noise Level (dBA)
*Heatsinks are ranked according to the 125W Thermal Test results column (rise over ambient temp.). Low temperatures with low noise levels are considered best. For reference heatsinks with variable-speed fans, only the high speed (12V) fan test result is included in the comparison sheet; more detailed results reside in each specific heatsink review.

With a 125W heat load applied by the AMD K8 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Akasa AK-876 heatsink yields a rise above ambient temperature of 20.0°C (48.2 dBA) will the fan operates at the nominal speed of 2500RPM. Once the 95mm PWM fan speed is then reduced to ~600/800RPM, the AK-876 heatsink is able to maintain a temperature of 28.0°C over ambient (noise 34.1 dBA).

When operated with its fan at full speed the Akasa AK-876 heatsink is a very gook AMD K8 heatsink, although it's up against some very serious competition from the likes of Thermalright, Zalman, AVC and others. The Noctua NH-U12 in particular runs both cooler and quieter, which is quite a feat.

Still, given the 80+ heatsinks Frostytech.com has compared the Akasa AK-876 against, it certainly handles itself very well. At its lowest fan speed setting, the AK-876 performs dead middle of the road - again an impressive result given its 34 dBA noise level. Akasa have very good lower noise AMD K8 heatsink here, but the AK-876 is by no means the best Frostytech has tested for this platform. Instead, the Akasa AK-876 offers a very good mix of great temperatures and reduced noise output.
