Abstract: As there is generally no more than about 30mm of height for the entire cooling package, fans will obviously take up precious real estate. For Socket 478 Intel processors.

What you want to be looking at in the list of reference coolers are the 1U heatsinks which include the Arkua 848X-6B, Dynatron DC1206BMV and Vantec CCK-7015. Thermal performance of these largely copper skived heatsinks is not in the same class as desktop heatsinks, but we can see where they stand compared to one another.

The final results indicate that for this list of reference heatsinks, the Dynatron DC1U-B02 doesn't fare too well. This is especially true if we consider the results of heatsinks like Dynatron's own DC1206BMV 1U cooler. Frankly speaking, we are a little surprised that Dynatron equipped the DC1U-B02 with a 50mm squirrel cage fan when a 60mm fan could have been used just as easily...

In our own tests we were able to improve the thermal results for the Dynatron DC1U-B02 by adding a neoprene gasket under the squirrel cage fan to seal off any spaces which would have allowed air to circumvent the path through the copper fins. With two other minor modifications we were able to drop overall temperatures by about 5 degrees as compared to the stock configuration. I think the one-size fits all approach Dynatron have applied with the DC1U-B02 1U copper skive heatsink disregards the small optimizations which could have been done to improve the overall performance characteristic of this heatsink.

A work in progress maybe, but for the moment if you need a 1U heatsink for the Pentium 4 platform, do yourself a favor and stick with the older Dynatron DC1206BMV. While that model does use a top-intake fan which will suffer a little from the height restrictions of a 1U chassis, the difference between it and the DC1U-B02 is substantial.
