To be quite frank, we did not expect the CPUmate DAI-10500 to produce very good thermal results after we first examined it. Another heatsink we reviewed previously, the TS Heatronics ZEN cooler used similar concepts and wasn't much of a performer.

However, once we had the test block up and running the thermal result told an entirely different story, and while the initial results still peg it a few points behind the high performers in this reference list, for the CPUMate DIA-10500 the results are quite good.

Looking like a little cube, the CPUmate DIA-10500 is an unassuming Pentium 4 heatsink that for its size, and materials appears to perform quite well. In this list of reference heatsinks the DIA-10500 manages to produce temperature results in an area dominated by predominantly copper heatsinks.

The twin heatpipes embedded in each of the heatsink's bases work effectively to move heat energy from the processor core to a larger surface area - without increasing the size of the heatsink at all.

Given the special HSRM we were a little concerned about how easy it would be to install the heatsink, but much to our surprise the unit CPUmate use works well. Once the blue HSRM is installed on the motherboard it is simply a matter of dropping the DIA-10500 in the right way (it is keyed so you can't make a mistake), and placing the top on. A small lever with a cam then applies the correct pressure and that's about it.

The thin, short fins of the aluminum heatsink provide good airflow characteristics and I suppose if the P4 socket is oriented in the correct way, an easy path to exhaust directly into the lower power supply intake fan.

The CPUmate DIA-10500 finish is good, and the machining of the heatsink looks as though it was done with consideration, but most of all it is the thermal results we are interested in. For a heatsink of this size, and made almost entirely of aluminum construction landing a sub 35 C degree rise above ambient temperature result is impressive. Bottom line, the CPUmate DIA-10500 offers better performance than the stock Intel heatsink but isn't able to offer quieter cooling. Noise is a moderate issue, but thankfully isn't high-pitched at all.
