Information on Frostytech's test methodology is available here.

BeQuiet's Pure Rock heatsink ships with a 120mm PWM fan that draws power from a standard 4-pin fan header. The 155mm tall heatsink uses four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes that pass through a 111mm tall aluminum fin stack. The raw aluminum fins measure 0.4mm thick and are spaced 2.0mm apart. The bottom-most fin is elevated 38mm above the socket for clearance.

The heatsink is 121mm wide and 89mm deep. The heat pipes are soldered to the nickel plated copper base plate/aluminum top cap and swaged into the aluminum fins. The heatpipes intersect the aluminum fins in a straight row, rather than spreading the heat out or a larger volume of space. Wire fan clips extend a further 5mm beyond the edge of the metal fins.

The nickel plated copper base of the BeQuiet Pure Rock heatsink measures 40x40mm in size and is between 2-5mm thick. It ships with a pre-applied patch of thermal compound. The aluminum support on the top-side of the heatpipes is 9.0mm thick. At the very top of the heatsink BeQuiet have added an aluminum bezel and turned heatpipe caps for a cleaner visual look. The leading and trailing edges of each fin has a saw tooth profile, which can help reduce flow resistance.

Base Finish and Flatness

Flipping a heatsink over to inspect the business end is often a simple indicator of overall cooler quality. More practically speaking, a heatsink is in many ways only as effective as the contact it makes with the processor - the flatter and smoother the better. Base finish is one of the criteria that Frostytech measure in the course of evaluating heatsinks, and it involves two distinct aspects. Surface Finish is the first; this is calculated with the aid of Surface Roughness Comparator that has a cross section of common machine surface finishes and their numerical surface roughness equivalents in microinches. The second is Surface Flatness. This is tested with an engineer's straight edge or proven flat surface, in two axes.

BeQuiet's Pure Rock has nickel plated copper base plate that measures 40x40mm square, with a very smooth machine turned surface finish. Surface roughness is higher than ~8 microinches. The base is convex in both axes.
