" Whether for an array you had to give only one data to the memory (the cell address)you can imagine that for a matrix there are two things - the ROW address and the COLUMN address. So that the CPU gives the ROW address to the memory which identifies the data's ROW. Than, after a small time it gives the COLUMN address and at this time the memory is able to find the location requested."
