new Cyrix III - FrostyTech.com new Cyrix III
Mon Jun 12, 2000 | 1:17A| PermaLink
"A few days ago VIA, announced their new Cyrix III processors running at actual speeds of 533Mhz to 667Mhz. Although it has a large L1 cache like the Athlon, the Cyrix III has no L2 cache. This was not a problem for the previous Cyrix processors, because they had L2 cache on the motherboard. The Cyrix III is a Socket 370 solution, and there are no Socket 370 motherboards with L2 cache on them. The Cyrix III won't even be able to compete with the Celeron without L2 cache. It seems very unlikely that any motherboard manufacturers would produce a motherboard just for a Cyrix III with L2 cache, even if they did, the cache would be at 100Mhz, which does not compare to the full speed cache of the Celeron, Celeron II, or Duron. The Cyrix III will have a tough time competing even in the low end market."
