"Even in today's graphically run world, text based connections to other computers, such as telnet, rlogin, rcp and ftp, are still being used frequently. From remote administration of a Linux box to playing text-based games on servers a world away, these tools have made basic communication between computers easy and relatively painless.
However, there is a price to using tools created in the earlier days of networks, that of security. Tools like telnet and ftp transmit the information shared between the two computers in plain text, which makes gathering sensitive information such as your username and password as easy as using packet sniffing ( a method of not dissimilar to phone tapping ) programs commonly found on even basic internet security sites. "
