This drive is packed with 12X write speed. It's got 32X read, which means it's fast enough to be used as a normal CD-ROM drive, too. In the time since the drive was released only one other drive has come out which is faster - the Yamaha 16X. I was originally going to get a Yamaha 16X, but decided not to. For one, the Yamaha doesn't have BURN-Proof technology (we will go into this more later), and secondly it doesn't write at 16X speed for the entire disk. The Yamaha starts out writing at 12X then ends up at 16X about one third of the way through the disk. The Plextor is only $20 cheaper than the Yamaha, at $200. Is it worth it to get a SLOWER drive for $20 less?
