ATI is back in the mix again. Their last chipset, the Rage128, was a little late to market, and plagued with driver instability. ATI's newest flagship chipset is the Radeon. Has ATI learned it's lesson? We take a look at the Radeon 32meg DDR AGP to find out.
ATI has been the dominant player in the video chipset business for quite some time. The darling of OEM's (and it's OEM contracts that are the bread and butter money makers in this business), and their strength in the notebook/portable market have made them strong. Interestingly enough though, they have never done exceedingly well in the high end performance market.
I won't rehash old history too much here. Suffice it to say their last few outings in the high end arena haven't been executed with the up most of grace. The Rage Pro was never really in the running. The Rage128 performed well, but shipped late, and was plagued with driver issues. The RageFury MAXX had issues, and didn't offer a compelling enough performance increase with it's dual GPU setup to warrant the initial price tag of the offering
