"Scott McCollum's recent column about alleged Internet workplace murderer Mike McDermott has matters completely backward. Human Resource (HR) departments are not too loose: they are way too strict in their hiring practices. For each employee hired by the typical high-tech firm -- companies such as Intel, Motorola, HP, and Microsoft -- there are 20 to 50 rejects. Who are these rejects? Typically, these are white, male, U.S. citizens, and have MS or Ph.D. degrees in engineering, science or computer fields."
