"RAID is short for Redundant Array of Independent Disks or Redundant Array or Inexpensive Disks depending on where you look. RAID was first defined by three California Berkeley researchers (Garth Gibson, David Patterson, and Randy Katz) in 1988. RAID was created to provide higher redundancy, higher capacity, and/or higher performance than a single disk. Popular consumer/enthusiast motherboards, such as the Abit KT7-RAID, now support varying levels of RAID sets (the KT7-RAID supports RAID 0, 1 and 0+1).
