"The official specifications of the AMD 760 chipset, however, call for the implementation of the AMD-766 South Bridge, which offers a virtually identical feature set to the VIA 686B South Bridge with the exception of AC'97 support. This is the reason, we believe, that Gigabyte decided to incorporate the VIA 686B South Bridge in the place of the AMD-766 South Bridge, as the AMD-766 South Bridge does not support AC'97 software sound devices or the CNR(Communications Network Riser)/AMR(Audio Modem Riser) slot, which offer OEMs(the target demographic of this board, it seems) the option to integrate a low-cost(read: low quality) sound and modem solution on one PCB, which would be unavailable if they decided on utilizing the AMD-766 South Bridge."
