"A spare Linux box can provide a cheap means of producing such a firewall on a shoestring budget. In fact, you'll find that an i486 firewall with 16MB can handle the traffic generated by your average T1 line.
There are two general methods that a person might take towards building such a firewall. The first involves so called "micro distributions", which are actually specially written distributions of Linux pared down to fit entirely on a 1.44MB floppy disk. Simply boot from the disk, run the setup program and you'll have a running firewall in minutes. There are several versions of these floppy distributions, including FrazierWall (http://www.frazierwall.com/) and FloppyFW (http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/), as well as the Linux Router Project (http://www.linuxrouter.org/).
