"A common misconception holds that Adobe Acrobat's PDF is the only file format needed for e-commerce. PDF documents are often used to display catalogs online because PDF renders information as it appears on a printed page. While PDF maintains document integrity, it limits information exchange -- so it is not well suited for e-commerce applications, which are based upon open exchanges of information. Even so, PDF is a popular data format for displaying catalogs online. Organizations use it to build online catalogs because the format preserves and presents the style defined by a paper catalog. Just like a paper catalog, PDF catalogs incorporate all the printed graphics, tables and other elements that paper catalog users expect. However, the pitfalls of PDF are many for a company that wants to conduct e-commerce."
