There are only two contenders in this category, namely AMD's Athlon "Thunderbird" processor and Intel's "Coppermine" Pentium III processor. The older AMD Slot-A Athlon processor with up to 512KB L2 cache was not considered in this category as it is an outdated product. Furthermore, it does not reflect the best that the Athlon architecture can offer. In addition, it makes a better comparison when we bring the Thunderbird and Coppermine into a one-on-one comparison as both of them have fairly similar specifications. The new Intel Pentium 4 was not in this category as it was only recently launched and not a year 2000 product.
