If you're looking for a reliable, no-frills high speed CD writer for an older computer, you might want to consider the Ricoh MP7125A. You'll never know when the JustLinkT buffer under-run prevention technology might come in handy. Also it has relatively fast reading speeds and acceptable writing speeds. The price is a little steep compared to the Yamaha CRW2100E CD-RW drive, but the latter does not include any buffer under-run prevention technology as is found on this Ricoh CD-RW drive. However, the Yamaha CRW2100E has a faster speed rating, and it makes more noise too.
