Copper shims - which I tried, and then threw away before they burned out my CPUs. As most people who are into overclocking will tell you - copper shims are a waste of time. CPUs vary in height by a small amount, and if your shims are too thick, you'll burn out the CPU. If they are too thin, they won't do anything. And probabalistically, they are never going to be precisely right. So, get a heatsink that is designed to fit properly in the first place, and don't muck around. Or, if you must, use something like the Alpha heatsinks and Thunderbirds have. Use soft pads that will compress slightly if necessary. They will aid stability a bit, but they are a lot less likely to cause your CPU to melt.
