There has been a lot of excitement lately in the computer technology industry generated by various technological advancements across many fields. These include processors, graphics cards, chipsets, cooling, audio, memory and numerous others. There has been much interest surrounding the arrival late last year of Intel's latest GHz monster the Pentium 4. Then more recently, AMD unleashed another beast into the sector - the AMD Athlon (T-Bird) family, (advanced to the 1.33GHz mark).
With all the excitement about these new processors there was also a lot of disappointment. Most of this surrounds the Pentium 4. Firstly, it is far too expensive when judged simply on a price/performance ratio. Added to this, it was essential the Pentium 4 systems have only one memory option, RD RAM was Intel's choice, and again this caused a price issue. With RD RAM, being roughly seven times more expensive than SD RAM, the price of a new Pentium 4 system with 256MB RD RAM would be about $4000 AUD minimum.
