Given the move by PC manufacturers towards motherboards with more and more built-in features, the need for a computer in a case with lots of room for expansion is shrinking.
So-called 'Mini-ITX' PCs pursue this idea to its logical conclusion - not only do they use a motherboard with on-board everything the size of an old 7in record sleeve, but they usually come in cases that are barely bigger than a cereal box.
Mini-ITX motherboards cost between £70 to £130 and all have a non-removable processor. The processors are made by VIA and are low-power models, with the fastest on a par, broadly speaking, with a 400MHz Intel Celeron.
In other words, they're slow by modern standards but they also run with the minimum of cooling and are adequate for most office-type tasks, such as word processing and web browsing.
If you're looking for a low-cost, quiet compact PC, then a Mini-ITX one is about as simple, low-cost and compact as they come.
