Playing computer games can be an expensive hobby. Keeping your hardware up to date, and fast enough to play with all of the eye-candy turned on takes a fast CPU, and more importantly a fast video card. NVIDIA's GeForce2 MX was the first true budget performance card on the market, allowing gamers enjoy beautiful graphics at an acceptable framerate, without surviving on mayonnaise sandwiches for a month to fund the purchase. Just when everyone was starting to complain about NVIDIA turning into a monopoly, along comes PowerVR and their Kyro II. Video card historians may recall the original Kyro's poor performance, and even worse driver support, ultimately killed the innovative video card. The second coming of this chip features a faster core and memory speed, and more importantly, the Kyro II is initially launching as the Hercules 3D Prophet 4500. I would imagine the marriage of the Hercules brand name and the Kyro II is a move to gain customer confidence by pairing the chip with a company known for producing kick ass video cards. And what a fine marriage it has been.
