"A great concern that I had whilst testing the 3D Prophet 4500 in DirectX 8.0 benchmarks such as DroneZ and 3DMark2001, was the fact that it scored so low. After doing further research on the topic I came across this thread in the GameStats forum. Here is a quote from that thread that fully explains this problem:
"The problem with the demo on 3D Mark2001 is a bug in DirectX8, both Kyro and Kyro II are "capable of rendering into textures". Unfortunatley DX8 does not check for this instead it has a list of compatable chips which we are not on (I think Voodoo3 is also missing but I will have to check that). The end result of this is when 3DMark2001 asks whether we support this feature, DX8 indicates we don't and the demo fails to run. This is a bug we have reported to Microsoft and hope it will be fixed in their next DX update, I believe around June. "
We were able to run the 3DMark2001 benchmark but with D3D Software rather than Hardware. This is reflected by the low scores that you will see later on in the review. Currently, there are no games that use the new DirectX 8.0 capabilities but I am sure we will be seeing some that do in the near future. We hope that Microsoft addresses this problem as soon as possible."
