"Games have been 3D for a long time. Back when the original Wolfenstein 3D (and others) came out, the big thing became "seeing" yourself in a 3D game world. You could move forward, back, left, right, and (later) up and down.
The first person shooter genre was born. Games became more immersive, worlds became more interactive, and magazines handed out awards faster than they became available. 3D graphics accelerators emerged to pick up the slack where CPU horsepower couldn't handle it, APIs with hardware support replaced the old days of software geometry and 3D game graphics matured."
