ATi Radeon 9000 Pro - FrostyTech.com ATi Radeon 9000 Pro
Tue Aug 13, 2002 | 6:51P| PermaLink
Well there may be confusion with the name Radeon 9000 because if you remember ATi's naming scheme it would mean it should provide DirectX 9 support. The naming game goes like this: The first Digit is the technology generation (for instance 8xxx=DirectX 8) and the last three would denote performance within the generation of the card. This would mean that the Radeon 9000 Pro has DirectX 9 support and is the lowest performing card of it's generation. With some research it is concluded that the name is in fact valid as ATi will does provide some DirectX 9 function BUT the first digit does not refer to the DirectX version. Guess this settles everything except why not name the Radeon 9000 Pro the Radeon 9100 instead, if the last three digits are used to denote performance within the generation of video cards why use a Pro after 9000 instead of boosting the number up a bit to cause less confusion.
