pictures of your desktop every second, optical technology enabled the user to have smooth precise control of the mouse at all times. Also, by having a tiny camera rather than the traditional ball and moving parts, Microsoft
also saved users countless of hours since we didn't have to clean out all the dust the ball picked up. Now, approximately a year and half later it appears Logitech has beat Microsoft to the punch.
